Installation of the included software was easy, as is operation. Close-ups are possible too - I took a picture of my thumb that fills the screen and you can clearly see the pattern of my thumb print. This is my first experience with a web camera, but I'm impressed. I installed the software anyway because it gives you control over various adjustments and features. I haven't tried it yet but noticed that it does have a longer cable. I installed on my desktop first as instructed, but then tried just plugging it in to my laptop. In my opinion the picture, video, and sound quality are very good.
It also comes with a little zippered pouch, which is a nice touch. I purchased it for use both with my newer desktop and with my older laptop. This web cam is really designed for portable use, so the USB cable is just long enough to reach from the edge of my desk (mounted on the included stand) down to the top of my tower on the floor. It was detected and worked right away. A warning came up that my laptop's resources might be inadequate and some features may not work, but I loaded it anyway and so far there are no problems. I just purchased the Logitech Webcam Pro 9000 for my parents so that we can video Skype together. I recommended either if these to my sister also.
This webcam is easy to use and have pretty good immage. My daughter uses it on her laptop.
I think few would be disappointed with the web cam's performance and features. This was baffling. I walked away from this product after no small effort to make it work. The installation took a long time and ultimately crashed my laptop with a blue screen error. In less challenging times, I would have hung in there and figured this out. My wife tried to download the Logitec Vid software and could not get it to load past a few percent of the download. My personal experience with the supplied software was poor. It's also worth mentioning that I am PC savvy and evaluating video related software is part of my job.
This overall installation process also resulted in our internet service going down twice. I had to re-power the cable modem after each installation attempt to restore it. However this did not include talking the time to call tech support. However with two young children, I hardly have time to order stuff, let alone fix it.
There are some usefull and funny effects. This is the best web camera I've used. Great picture, clear sound, effortless software installation and all features setup. It works much better then embedded web cameras on my family Lenovo, Toshiba and Dell loptops. I could not be any happier with this purchase from Amazon, especialy considering the $64 price tag with no tax or shipping charges.
Then after about 10-15 seconds, it seemed as though the webcam reset itself and suddenly the video quality (on both ends) became horribly pixelated and wouldn't get better. I video chat with him on Skype almost daily, but his mom needs to use her computer and worries about him damaging it (he is almost 3, but already knows how to do some things on the computer). So I bought the new (2MP)webcam thinking that it would improve the video quality. I purchased the Logitech C905 webcam because the netbook (Asus EeePC 1005HA) that I bought my son for Christmas only has a.3 megapixel webcam built in (why they didn't put a 1.3MP webcam in like most other netbooks I looked at, I don't know but it was still the best netbook I found within the price range). So then I tried using the built in webcam again and had the same problem. I also upgraded the RAM. When I installed the webcam and tried a test video call between his computer and mine, the video quality was initially very good. It wasn't until I uninstalled the Logitech webcam that I stopped having this problem.I don't know if the problem is caused by the latest version of Skype, the fact that it is on a netbook, or some flaw with the Logitech hardware or software. I guess we will have to settle for the built in webcam until I find a better solution.
